Justin Bieber Supergroup? Adam Levine Just 'Messing' Around

'Because it's Justin Bieber, it gets put up on Twitter and is fact,' Levine tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Those of you familiar with the commotion Justin Bieber causes no matter where he goes or whatever he says will likely understand the fact that when the "Boyfriend" singer took to Twitter recently to jokingly "announce" a supergroup he's forming with Maroon 5 frontman and "Voice" judge Adam Levine, the Internets took it seriously.

"Back in the studio tonight with my new #Supergroup @adamlevine @kennyhamilton," Bieber <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/179710758983180290"target="_blank">tweeted back in March and continued to jokingly refer to his musical collaborations with Levine and Ryan Tedder for his upcoming album "Believe" as the start of something truly super.

Bieber continued with the supergroup references when he appeared on "The Voice" last week and playfully called out Levine for not being fully committed to their "project."

"Adam, what's up, man? Hey, I know we didn't really get to do our supergroup thing," he said onstage. "Basically, we were going to do this supergroup, but he released his single, I released my single," Bieber explained to host Carson Daly, to which Adam replied, "I'm sorry I quit, man."

MTV News recently caught up with Levine on the set of Maroon 5's new music video for "Payphone," where we asked the frontman to address the supergroup rumblings.

"The supergroup thing was a joke and, of course, because it's Justin Bieber, it gets put up on Twitter and is fact," Levine said. "We were just messing with people. It's funny. He's a really good kid, and I think he deserves what he's got. There aren't many people out there who can appreciate that level of success as much as he does. As in the Jewish culture, we say he's a mensch."

How we love celeb BFFs. Bieber might have to keep a lid on his budding "bromance" with Levine, however, because fellow "Voice" judge Blake Shelton has already claimed the top bromantic spot, via Twitter, of course.

"Me and @adamlevine have a #bromance and @blakeshelton is jealous. Ha," Bieber tweeted before his appearance on "The Voice" last week.

"Jealous?!! You wish!! He's mine!!" Shelton immediately shot back in reply.

Do you hope the rumors become reality? Let us know in the comments!

'Avengers' Already A Smash Overseas

Superhero movie, due Stateside in early May, is already breaking records in foreign markets.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The Avengers have already started to assemble overseas, and early box-office reports are spelling very good things for Marvel's tentpole. The superhero movie that brings together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk has reportedly made $12.5 million in a handful of foreign markets and is already breaking records, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In Australia, "The Avengers" has already banked $7 million, a total that has only been beaten by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which earned $8 million during its Down Under debut.

The foreign rollout has proven lucrative elsewhere, too, as France added $3 million to the total.

Early tracking estimated that "The Avengers" could make more than $150 million during its early May opening weekend in the U.S. That would put the film in the same class as "Spider-Man 3," "The Hunger Games," "The Dark Knight" and "Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

This could potentially mean the biggest debut for a Marvel Studios movie yet. "Iron Man 2" currently holds that honor. The Robert Downey Jr. sequel opened to $128 million back in 2010. That's followed by the first "Iron Man" at $98 million.

"The Avengers" has the added advantage of higher ticket prices. The film is playing both in 3-D and in IMAX 3-D, so each individual ticket will add more to the final total. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" saw a large bump in its record-breaking run thanks in part to higher prices attached to 3-D showings.

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

'Prometheus' Could Land R Rating, Will Be Released 'Uncut' Regardless

'We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it's an R, then so be it,' Fox chief Tom Rothman tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Fresh off the release of a visually stunning new "Prometheus" featurette — which we can't stop talking about here at MTV News — comes this excellent tidbit from Fox studio chief Tom Rothman regarding the film's still-to-be-determined rating, which could very likely be an R.

"The rating board has not opined yet and it will go in to the board soon," Rothman told us on the press line for the studio's CinemaCon panel. "This I can tell you and I can tell all the fans, not one frame will be cut. The movie will be what it should be. We will not cut a frame of the film," he promised. "We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it's an R, then so be it, because not an ounce, not a percentage are we going to compromise the film."

Rothman went on to say that the film does indeed live up to the hype surrounding it and that he genuinely couldn't wait to see each and every new cut, visual effect and element added to the film during it's post-production.

"When we first saw the movie in 3-D, it's breathtaking," he said. "So I hope [it lives up to the hype]. I think so, I believe so." The excitable studio chief also explained his reasoning behind the title "Prometheus" and why they chose to leave the word "Alien" out of it altogether.

"I think the easy thing would have been to make an 'Alien' prequel and that's where it started as an idea, but it evolved," he said. "Ridley's ideas are much bigger than that and it really is a brand-new film, and this is the man who made 'Blade Runner.' He hasn't made a science-fiction film in 30 years, and to be honest, I didn't want to undersell it. 'Prometheus' is an ambitious title I hope everybody knows — it's the name of the ship in the movie but also [based on] the god who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man and paid a serious price for it, so be careful what you do. The cautionary guy, Prometheus," he joked.

Rothman said "Prometheus" is not just a movie for "Alien" fans. "It's a big, bold new-idea movie and we want it in the title because people know [that] this movie stands on its own," Rothman added. "If you're a fan of 'Alien,' great. But if you're not, it's entirely self-contained and full of new ideas."

Check out everything we've got on "Prometheus."

Hollywood Undead: The New 'Nookie' Monsters Of Rock

Is it time for a nu-metal/ rap-rock revival? Bigger Than the Sound investigates.
By James Montgomery

By their own admission, Hollywood Undead make music about "girls, drinking and violence." This is quite possibly the most succinct description in the history of the world.

Because their debut album, Swan Songs (which was released last September and has — unbeknownst to pretty much everyone — sold more than 260,000 copies to date) is about nothing but girls, drinking and violence, except for the last song, which seems to be about reincarnation or God or the afterlife or something like that.

It is a fabulously lunkheaded album, one where rap-rock odes to malt liquor collide with angsty,

Linkin-Park-lite rages against the status quo (they are outcasts, you see — check the masks). There are songs about "ridin' with gangsters" and "pimpin'," songs about being "horny like the sickness," and (I suppose) serious songs about how they "can't keep going on this way." Sometimes, these lyrics are rapped over crunchy guitars and trilling pseudo-strings. Other times, they're screamed, though the backbeat remains unchanged. The liner notes are packed with spooky photos of the guys in their masks (and ones featuring scantily clad ladies) and close-ups of cigarette-filled ashtrays and crosses. There is also gratuitous use of the Olde English font.

I truly did not believe they still made albums like this.

And that is the most fascinating thing about the Hollywood Undead. It's not the fact that they've become a rather unheralded sensation, or that they command a loyal following of fans (their so-called "Undead Army"). After all, this is music tailor-made for angsty, angry teenagers, self-described outcasts who feel like no one understands them (which is to say, it's music for basically every teenager); if HU weren't successful, something would be wrong with the world. No, what's so amazing about them is the fact that they even made Swan Songs in the first place, because this is music straight out of a time capsule.

Listening to Swan Songs, I am struck by how untouched it is by anything that has happened in rock music over the past decade. It is — to play the part if the lazy music journo — nu nu-metal (or retro rap-rock, if you prefer).Hammered by the rocketing guitars, guttural yowls and rapped missives, it's not difficult to imagine that we are still living in 1999, a time when backward-ball-cap-wearing rock dinosaurs trudged the earth, sold bazillions of records and emerged from giant onstage toilet bowls. I can almost hear the bagpipe solos and the DJ scratches and wait with baited breath for the inevitable rhyming of "Nookie" with "Cookie." Those moments don't come over the course of Swan Songs' 14 tracks, but it's entirely possible they might on Hollywood Undead's next album.

To their credit, none of the guys in HU admit to ever listening to so-called nu-metal acts like Limp Bizkit or Korn or Linkin Park — or at least they didn't when I sat down with them Tuesday (for the record, they are very nice guys and, without the masks, they are decidedly less-than-threatening; Charlie Scene sort of looks like Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard). They all grew up in and around Hollywood, listening to stuff like N.W.A, and none of them ever attended Ozzfest — which is why they're somewhat mystified by the rap-rock handle they seem to be saddled with. To them, what they make is simply music about the things they see in their everyday life; these things just tend to be girls, drinking and violence.

Of course, to me, it seems they're short-selling themselves. Theirs is a special sort of brilliance: a steadfast commitment to a universally derided genre of music that just might be making a gigantic comeback. There are millions of angry tweens out there, kids who are looking for an outlet and — perhaps most importantly — were roughly 3 years old when acts like Bizkit and Korn were at the height of their powers, which means they don't know any better. And given the recent Bizkit reunion, and the talk of another Woodstock Festival, we could be living in 1999 all over again. Nu nu-metal could be the next big movement. And Hollywood Undead could very well be the standard-bearers.

Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen, which is why I am refraining from judging HU too harshly — it's almost too easy to say they are terrible and I think it would be missing the point. Because they might actually be visionaries. Whether they intended to or not, they have stumbled upon something positively brilliant with their music. Listening to them is like uncorking a vintage bottle of aggro, a dark and supple pinot noir that makes me miss the halcyon days of Fred Durst and that dude from Puddle of Mudd (OK, not really). But it still gets me drunk and makes me wanna break stuff. Retro rage, vinted 1999. Drink up.

Questions? Comments?
