Justin Bieber Takes Selena Gomez On Romantic Helicopter Ride

Tomorrow, catch 'Bieber Live,' where Justin will perform and chat with Sway at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> headed up to Canada over the weekend to attend Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards. While he was in his native country, he decided to do something really romantic for lady love <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml">Selena Gomez</a>.</P><P>A day before he and Gomez appeared on the awards show, Justin rented a helicopter and flew around Toronto between rehearsals. During the ride, he took her to his hometown of Stratford, Ontario, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20604852,00.html" target="_blank">People.com</a> reported. A source added that it was "a relaxing and romantic break from work" and that "they were very excited."</P><P>Sunday was just as exciting for Bieber as he took home two prizes for Best International Video of the Year by a Canadian for "Boyfriend" and UR Fave Artist. The teen also hit the stage to perform "Boyfriend" and "All Around the World," from his album <i>Believe,</i> out Tuesday. Be sure to tune in on Tuesday for MTV's "Bieber Live," where Justin will dish about his new album at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT.</P><P>Bieber recently gushed about his girlfriend to <a href="http://fabulousmag.co.uk/2012/06/18/justin-bieber-exclusive-interview-uk-girls-have-the-dirtiest-mouths/" target="_blank"><i>Fabulous</i></a> magazine, but noted that he also has love for the other ladies in his life: his fans.</P><P>"I never like to throw it in my fans' faces. I love my fans and I'd never want to do that to them," he said of keeping a low profile with Selena. "It's my private life and I like to keep that separate. I don't have many things that I get to myself but that's one thing. I'm very happy, and I know my fans just want to be happy for me."</P><P>Bieber and Gomez's relationship first became public in January 2011 when they were <a href="/news/articles/1655145/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-spotted-together-st-lucia.jhtml">spotted on vacation together in St. Lucia</a>. But in the 18 months since they were photographed on that romantic trip, they haven't been shy about their love for each other.</P><P>"My first kiss with Selena was the best of my life. It was in the car. It was scary and spontaneous and it was just awesome," he recalled. "What does love feel like? It feels good. If you're really in love, then you should get butterflies &#8212; butterflies and happiness. That's how I feel anyway."</P><P>Bieber sings plenty about love on his June 19 album, <a href="/news/articles/1687569/justin-bieber-live-evolution.jhtml"><i>Believe.</i></a> And he'll not only discuss the release, but also perform during "Bieber Live" on MTV tomorrow.</P><P><b>Don't miss <a href="/news/articles/1687565/justin-bieber-live-mtv.jhtml">"Bieber Live"</a> on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.</b></p>

Lady Gaga's Indonesian Flash Mob Made Her 'Cry So Hard'

'You are the best fans,' Gaga tweets after fans pay tribute following cancellation of her Jakarta concert.
By James Montgomery

<P>Late last month, <a href=http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml>Lady Gaga</a> was forced to cancel her <a href="/news/articles/1685874/lady-gaga-indonesian-concert.jhtml">June 3 concert in Jakarta, Indonesia</a>, after protests from Islamic groups led to national police denying her a permit for the show. But now, a different group of Indonesians has taken to the street, this time to show their support for the Mother Monster. And it's left Gaga in tears.</P><P>In a show of solidarity and support, 91 of Gaga's biggest, bravest fans &#8212; dubbed the Indonesian Little Monsters &#8212; gathered at Jakarta's Ex Plaza Indonesia shopping center for a flash-mob tribute to the singer. They were dressed to the nines in their Gaga finest, breaking into a choreographed dance number while surprised shoppers looked on &#8212; and filmed the entire routine on their camera phones.</P><P>In the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWqe6EozGro" target="_blank">10-minute video</a>, uploaded on Saturday, the group grooves to Gaga hits like "Telephone," "Bad Romance" and "Judas" before triumphantly embracing at the performance's end. And as if their routine didn't serve as a loud enough rebuke against the nation's conservative Islamic groups, the Indonesian Monsters end the clip with a message to both those groups and to Gaga herself, writing:</P><P>"Tons of rejection and hatred are everywhere. But still, we will always [get] your back. We respect your decision [to cancel] BTW Ball, and it doesn't change how much we love you. We love you, Mother Monster, 'til the end."</P><P>Understandably, Gaga was moved by the outpouring of support, posting the video on her Twitter account, along with a <a href="https://twitter.com/ladygaga/status/209557682728878080" target="_blank">response</a> to her Indonesian Monsters.</P><P>"This made me cry so hard," Gaga wrote. "I love you so much. You are the best fans in the world."</p>

Readout of President Obama’s Calls to Governor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach

Today, President Obama called Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper as well as Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach to receive an update on damaging fires that are impacting a number of communities across the state, including the devastating Waldo Canyon fire that is affecting families, homes and businesses in Colorado Springs, CO. The President expressed his concern about the extent of damage to homes in the Colorado Springs area, and informed both the Governor and the Mayor that he plans to travel to the area Friday to view the damage and thank the responders bravely battling the fire.

The President reiterated his administration’s focus, through the US Forest Service as well as the Department of Interior and FEMA, on continuing to bring all resources to bear to assist local responders in Colorado and a number of Western States currently being impacted by fires. Seventeen air tankers have cycled in and out of firefighting action over the last 48 hours across the western states. More than 8,400 personnel, 578 fire engines and 79 helicopters are operating on wildfires around the U.S., with more than half of active federal wildfire-fighting resources are currently staged in Colorado.

Federal support is also being provided to local officials battling fires in Alaska, Arizona, California, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

The President made clear that he has directed his team to remain focused on the fires. He asked the Governor and the Mayor to identify any additional resources that could be provided and informed both that his thoughts and prayers are with responders and families impacted by these and other fires burning across the western United States.

I went to the NERF site to look for a basketball set for my first grader. I just got back from three days of climbing and canyoneering around Moab with four friends. The final highlight of the trip was taking them down the Medieval Chamber, a dramatic canyon with a couple rappels. The first rappel drops 100 feet into the Chamber, a huge pothole excavated by thousands of flash floods.

Remarks by the President at a Campaign Event

Oyster River High School
Durham, New Hampshire

2:34 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello, New Hampshire!  (Applause.)  Hello, Durham!  (Applause.)  Thank you.  Thank you so much.  Thank you, everybody.  It is great to be back in New Hampshire.  (Applause.)

A couple of people I want to acknowledge.  First of all, wasn't Scott outstanding?  Give Scotty a big round of applause for his introduction.  (Applause.)  I want to thank Todd Allen, who is the principal here at Oyster River High School.  (Applause.)  And I want to thank our outstanding Senator from New Hampshire, Jeanne Shaheen.  (Applause.)  And I want to thank all of you.  (Applause.)

I know it's a little warm in here.  (Laughter.)  That’s okay.  That's okay.  It is wonderful to be back.  And I just have so many good memories here in New Hampshire, and I see some familiar faces and folks who were with me when people were still figuring out how to pronounce my name.  (Laughter.)

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  We love you!

THE PRESIDENT:  I love you guys back.  I really do.  (Applause.)

Now, I am back here in New Hampshire not just because I need your help -- although I do.  But more importantly, I'm here because your country needs your help.

In 2008, we came together to reclaim the basic bargain that built this country -- the basic ideal of this country, the thing that created the largest middle class, the most prosperous nation in the history of the world.  We came together because we believe that in America, your success shouldn’t be determined by the circumstances of your birth.  (Applause.)

Here in the United States of America, if you are willing to work hard, you should be able to find a good job.  If you’re willing to meet your responsibilities, you should be able to take care of your family, and own a home, maybe start a business, give your kids a better chance than you had -– no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like, no matter who you love.  (Applause.)  That’s what we believe.  That’s what America is about.  (Applause.)

That’s why we came together.  That’s why so many of you got involved in 2008.  It wasn't because you thought my election was a sure thing -- when you support a guy named Barack Obama -- (laughter) -- you know that’s not a guarantee.  But we shared that common sense of what America has been, and is, and must be for the future.  (Applause.)

I ran for this office because for more than a decade, that basic bargain, that profound American Dream had been slipping away from too many people.  Before I took office, the worst economic crisis of our lifetime made it even worse.

So, Durham, the debate in this election is not whether we need to do better -- everybody understands that our economy isn't where it needs to be.  There are too many people out there who are struggling, too many folks out of work, too many homes that are still underwater.  Of course, we need to do better.  The debate is not whether; it is how.  (Applause.)  How do we grow the economy faster?  How do we create more jobs?  How do we pay down our debt?  How do we reclaim that central American promise that no matter who you are, you can make it here if you try?

And this is not just the usual run-of-the-mill political argument.  This is not the usual Washington chatter -- there’s a lot of that.  But this, this is the defining issue of our time.  This is a make-or-break moment for our middle class, and folks who are aspiring to get into the middle class.  The next President and the next Congress will face a set of decisions -- on the economy, on deficits, on taxes -– that will have a profound impact not only on the country we live in today, but the country that we pass on to our kids.

And here’s why you’re so important -- because what’s holding us back from meeting the challenges we face is not the lack of big ideas, it’s not the lack of technical solutions.  Just about every policy and proposal, by now, has been put on the table; everybody knows what the options are.  What’s holding us back is a stalemate in Washington between two fundamentally different visions of which direction we should go.  (Applause.)

And, New Hampshire, this election is your chance to break the stalemate.  This election is your chance to move this country forward instead of seeing it go backwards.  That’s why I’m here. That’s why I need your help.  (Applause.)

AUDIENCE:  Four more years!  Four more years!  Four more years!

THE PRESIDENT:  Governor Romney and his allies in Congress, they believe -- they have a certain idea about how they would proceed if they’re in power.  They think that we should go back to the top-down economic policies of the last decade.

AUDIENCE:  No!

THE PRESIDENT:  They believe that if we eliminate regulations and we cut taxes by trillions of dollars, that the market will solve all of our problems on its own.  They argue that if we help corporations and wealthy investors maximize their profits by whatever means necessary -- whether it’s through layoffs or outsourcing or whatever steps it takes to maximize those profits -- that that automatically translates into jobs and prosperity for you.

AUDIENCE:  Booo --

THE PRESIDENT:  Now, just last week, it was reported that Governor Romney’s old firm owned companies that were "pioneers" in the business of outsourcing American jobs to places like China and India.  Now --

AUDIENCE:  Booo --

THE PRESIDENT:  So yesterday, his advisors were asked about this and they tried to clear this up by telling us there’s actually a difference between "outsourcing" and "off-shoring."  (Laughter.)  That’s what they said.  You cannot make this stuff up.  (Laughter.)

Now, what Governor Romney and his advisors don’t seem to understand is this:  If you’re a worker whose job went overseas, you don’t need somebody trying to explain to you the difference between outsourcing and offshoring.  You need somebody who's going to wake up every single day and fight for American jobs and investment here in the United States.  (Applause.)  That’s what you need.  That’s why I’m running.  (Applause.)

Unlike Governor Romney, I want to close the outsourcing loophole in our tax code.  I want to give tax breaks to companies who create jobs and manufacturing here in New Hampshire, here in the United States of America.  (Applause.)

But what’s important to understand is Governor Romney’s commitment to outsourcing is not just part of his record, it’s part of an overall economic vision that he and Republicans in Congress want to implement if they win this election.

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Hell, no!  (Laughter and applause.)

THE PRESIDENT:  And, look, their plan is pretty simple.  It’s been voted on in Congress.  It’s right there on Governor Romney’s website.  First of all, they promise to roll back all kinds of regulation on banks and polluters and insurance companies and oil companies.

AUDIENCE:  Booo --

THE PRESIDENT:  So that’s step number one.  And then, second, they promise not only to keep all of the Bush tax cuts in place -- not just the ones for the middle class, but for everybody, for the wealthiest Americans -- but they also then want to add another $5 trillion in tax cuts on top of that, including a 25 percent tax cut for every millionaire in the country.

AUDIENCE:  Booo --

THE PRESIDENT:  Now, you may be wondering -- because I can tell -- (laughter) -- you’re scratching your head here -- you may be wondering how do they spend $5 trillion on new tax cuts and still keep a straight face when they say that their plan would reduce our deficit?  This is a good question.  (Laughter.)  Well, they say that they’ll start by proposing $1 trillion in cuts to things like education and training --

AUDIENCE: No!

THE PRESIDENT:  -- and medical research and clean energy.  But that's only $1 trillion.  They’ve got $5 trillion that they want to pay for, right?  So that’s not enough.  So they also propose eliminating health care for about 50 million Americans and turning Medicare into a voucher program.

AUDIENCE:  Booo --

THE PRESIDENT:  But that’s still not enough.  Still haven’t gotten to the $5 trillion yet.  So then they’ll also have to raise taxes on the middle class by taking away tax benefits for everything from health care to college to retirement to home ownership, and this could cost some families thousands of dollars.

So think about this.  To pay for another $250,000 tax cut for the average millionaire, they’re going to ask you to foot the bill.

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  We can’t afford it!

THE PRESIDENT:  I figure you can’t afford it.  (Laughter and applause.)   Is there anybody here who can afford to pay thousands of dollars to give folks like Mr. Romney or me another tax cut?

AUDIENCE:  No!

THE PRESIDENT:  Unfortunately, that is their entire economic plan.  That’s it.  When Mr. Romney tells us he’s some sort of financial wizard who can fix our economy, that’s exactly how he intends to do it.

Now, there may be some people -- in fact, I know there are some people -- who think this kind of plan is a good idea.  They want to give the policies of the last decade another try.  And if they do, they should vote for Mr. Romney.  They should reelect the Republicans who’ve been running Congress.  Together, they will take America back down this path that we tried.

I believe they’re wrong.  I believe their policies were tested, and they failed.  (Applause.)  And that -- my belief is not just based on some knee-jerk partisan reaction.  It’s based on the fact that we tried it.  And you look at our economic history.  In this country, prosperity has never come from the top down.  It comes from a strong and growing middle class.  (Applause.)  It comes from successful, thriving small businesses. (Applause.)

We don’t need more top-down economics.  (Applause.)  What we need is a better plan for education and training -- (applause) -- and energy independence and infrastructure and innovation that rebuilds America.  What we need is a tax code that encourages companies to create jobs and manufacturing here in the United States -- (applause) -- and that asks the wealthiest Americans to pay a little bit more to help pay down our deficit.  (Applause.)
Listen, we don’t expect government to solve all our problems, and it shouldn’t try to solve all our problems.  I learned from my mom no education policy can take the place of a parent’s love and attention -- and sometimes scolding.  (Laughter.)  As a young man, I worked with a group of Catholic churches who taught me that no poverty program can make as much of a difference as the kindness and commitment and involvement of caring neighbors and friends and fellow parishioners.  (Applause.)

Over the last three years, I cut taxes for the typical working family by $3,600.  (Applause.)  I cut taxes for small businesses 18 times.  (Applause.)  I don’t believe every regulation is smart, or that every tax dollar is spent wisely.  I don’t believe we should be in the business of helping people who refuse to help themselves.  (Applause.)  But let me tell you what I do believe.

I share the belief of our first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, that through government, we should do together what we cannot do as well for ourselves.  (Applause.)

And that’s how we built this country –- together.  We built railroads and highways, and the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge.  We did that together.  We did big things together.  We sent my grandfather’s generation to college on the GI Bill.  We did that together.   (Applause.)

We invented amazing scientific technologies and medical breakthroughs because we invested in basic research and science. We did those things together.  We didn’t do those things for any particular individual, any particular group, but we understood that by making these common investments, everybody would have the platform, everybody would have the capacity to do better.  It would make us all richer -- together.  It gave all of us opportunity -- together.  (Applause.)

We moved forward together, as one nation and as one people. And that is the right lesson for our future.  That's why I’m running for a second term as President of the United States -- because I want us all to move forward together.  (Applause.)

AUDIENCE:  Four more years!  Four more years!  Four more years!

THE PRESIDENT:  I’m running to make sure that every American has a chance to get the skills and training that today’s jobs require.  My plan would recruit an army of new teachers, pay those teachers better.  (Applause.)  I want to hire more teachers in areas like math and science.  I want to give 2 million more Americans the chance to go to community colleges and learn the skills that local businesses are looking for right now.  (Applause.)  And I want to make higher education affordable for every American who’s willing to work for it –- not just by offering more loans and financial aid, but by holding down the costs of a college tuition.  (Applause.)

A college education can't be a luxury.  It’s a vital necessity for everybody.  It may not be a four-year college; it may be a two-year college, it may be a technical school.  But everybody is going to need the skills they need to compete.  And that's the choice in this election.  That's why I’m running for President.  (Applause.)

Now, I’m running so that we have a future where we control our own energy, and that's good for our economy, our security.  It’s good for our environment.  (Applause.)  So my plan would end government subsidies to oil companies that are making plenty of profits.  Let’s double down on clean energy -- (applause) -- wind power and solar power, next generation of biofuels, fuel-efficient cars.  That’s the choice in this election.

I’m running to make sure that the United States of America is the best place on Earth for innovation and discovery, which is why my plan would give companies a permanent tax credit for research and development that they do here in America, and we double down on the public research that's helped lay the foundation for the Internet and GPS and Google, and the countless companies and jobs that follow.

I’m running so that after a decade of war, we can start doing some nation-building here at home.  (Applause.)  So we've ended the war in Iraq.  We are transitioning in Afghanistan.  My plan would take half the money we’re no longer spending on war, use it to put people back to work rebuilding our roads and our runways and our ports and our wireless networks.  (Applause.)  That’s the choice in this election.

I’m running so that we can reduce our deficit in a responsible way, by $4 trillion, doing it in a balanced, responsible way --

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  The way it was done before.

THE PRESIDENT:  The way it was done before.  (Applause.)  I put forward a detailed plan.  It will cut spending we can’t afford.  And there's some programs that don't work -- we can eliminate that money -- strengthen programs like Medicare for the long haul, reform our tax code so that the wealthiest Americans pay a little bit more, just like they did when Bill Clinton was President -- (applause) -- just like they did when our economy created 23 million new jobs.  (Applause.)

I mean, think about it, we created 23 million new jobs, the biggest budget surplus in history -- and, by the way, we produced a lot of millionaires, too.  There’s no contradiction here.  And there are plenty of patriotic, successful Americans, a lot of business leaders, a lot of folks who’d be willing to make this contribution again if they were asked to help pay down the deficit and they saw it as part of a responsible, balanced plan.

This is about choices.  I don’t believe that giving millionaires and billionaires a $250,000 tax cut is going to do more for our future than hiring transformative teachers, or providing financial aid to the children of middle-class families. (Applause.)  I don’t believe a poorly designed tax cut like that is more likely to create jobs than providing loans to new entrepreneurs, or tax credits to small businesses who hire veterans.  I don’t think it’s more likely to spur economic growth than investments in clean energy and medical research, and new roads and bridges and runways.

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Eldercare.

THE PRESIDENT:  Or eldercare.

So Governor Romney, he fundamentally disagrees with my vision.  That’s what elections are about.  His allies in Congress disagree with my vision.  Neither of them will endorse any policy that asks the wealthiest Americans to pay even a nickel more in taxes.

AUDIENCE:  Booo--

THE PRESIDENT:  That’s the reason we haven’t reached an agreement on our deficit.  It’s the reason my jobs bill that would put more than 1 million people back to work has been voted down by Republicans in the Congress again and again and again.  It’s been the biggest source of gridlock in Washington for the last three years.

And, New Hampshire, the only thing that can break this stalemate is you.  (Applause.)  Is you.  In this election, on every single challenge that we face, you’ve got the final say.  That’s the amazing thing about our democracy.

You can decide whether we keep our brave men and women in Afghanistan indefinitely, like Mr. Romney wants to do, or whether we stick to the timeline that I’ve set to finally bring our troops home.  That’s up to you.  (Applause.)

You can decide that instead of restricting access to birth control or defunding Planned Parenthood, we should make sure that in this country, women control their own health care choices.  That’s up to you.  (Applause.)

You can decide whether we keep Wall Street reform; whether ending taxpayer bailouts for Wall Street banks was the right thing to do; whether preventing insurance companies from discriminating against people who are sick is the right thing to do; whether over 3 million young people being able to stay on their parent’s health insurance plan is the right thing to do.  (Applause.)

You can decide whether or not we go back to the days when you could be kicked out of the United States military just because of who you are and who you love.  (Applause.)  You can decide whether or not it’s time to stop denying citizenship to responsible young people just because they’re the children of undocumented workers -- (applause) -- who have been growing up with our kids and want to contribute to this country.

It’s going to be up to you whether we continue seeing these elections where multimillion-dollar donations, one person writing a $10 million check -- whether that speaks louder than the voices of ordinary citizens.  It’s all up to you.  (Applause.)

This is going to be a close election.  And from now until November, the other side will spend more money than at any time in American history.  And almost all of it will be on ads that tell you the economy is bad -- it's all Obama's fault.  He can't fix it because he thinks government is always the answer; because he doesn’t have the experience of making a lot of money in the private sector; or because he is in over his head; or because he thinks everything is just fine.  (Laughter.)

That’s what the scary voices in the ads will tell you over and over and over again.  That’s what Mitt Romney will say.  That’s what the Republicans in Congress will say.  And I give them credit -- they have a lot of message discipline.  They just repeat over and over and over again the same thing.  (Laughter.) Doesn’t matter if it's true, they'll just keep on repeating.  That's what they do.

But you know what, that may be a plan to win the election; it’s sure not a plan to create jobs.  It’s not a plan to grow the economy.  It’s not a plan to pay down our debt.  It's not a plan to revive the middle class and restore the American Dream.

So, Durham, if you believe we need a plan for education and energy, for infrastructure and innovation; if you believe that our economy grows best when everybody has a fair shot and everybody is doing their fair share, and everybody is playing by the same set of rules -- (applause) -- then I'm going to need you to stand with me as I run for a second term as President.  (Applause.)  I'm going to need you.  The country is going to need you.  (Applause.)

And here in New Hampshire, I know you guys have a tradition -- a lot of independents out here.  Listen, I'm asking you -- vote for anybody else -- Democrat, independent, Republican -- anybody who shares your views about how this country should move forward.  I will work with anyone of any party who believes that we are in this together, that we rise or fall as one nation, and as one people.  (Applause.)

It's fashionable right now for people to be cynical.  We go in cycles like this, and right now a lot of people are saying, oh, America is doing terribly and this and that, and what are we going to do.  Let me tell you something.  There's no problem out there, no challenge we face, that we do not have the capacity to solve.  (Applause.)  We are Americans, and we are tougher than whatever tough times may bring us.  And what’s lacking right now is our politics.  What's lacking right now is that some of the worst impulses in our politics have been rewarded.  And that’s something entirely within your power to solve.

And in 2008, we made a commitment to each other.  We said, together, he can bring about change -- even against opposition, even against all kinds of nonsense going on in the campaigns.  What we saw, what we witnessed, was that when Americans, as citizens, come together nothing can stop them.

And I made a commitment to you.  I said, you know what, I'm not going to be a perfect President.  I'm not a perfect man -- Michelle can tell you that.  (Laughter.)  But you know what I did say?  I said -- some of you may remember this -- I said I will always tell you where I stand, I will always tell you what I think, what I believe.  And I will wake up every single day, fighting as hard as I can for you -- (applause)-- fighting as hard as I know how for American families who are out there working hard, who are out there striving, who are doing what they're supposed to be doing.  (Applause.)

And you know what, New Hampshire, I've kept that promise, because I still believe in you.  I believe in the American people.  (Applause.)  And I need you to keep believing in me.  I need you to hit some doors and make some phone calls and register your friends.  Talk to your neighbors.  Get on Facebook.  Get on Twitter.  (Applause.)  Let's get to work.  Let's finish what we started.  Let's remind the world how a strong economy is built, and remind them why America is the greatest nation on Earth.

Thank you, everybody.  God bless you.  God bless America.

The Invisible War

A groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America's most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem-today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 22,800 violent sex crimes in the military in 2011. 20% of all active-duty female soldiers are sexually assaulted. Female soldiers aged 18 to 21 accounted for more than half of the victims. [...]

Press Gaggle by Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest Aboard Air Force One, 6/22/12

Aboard Air Force One
En Route Orlando, Florida

10:49 A.M. EDT

MR. EARNEST: Good morning, everybody. Welcome aboard Air Force One as we wing our way to the Sunshine State. I have some brief opening remarks, and then we'll open it up to questions.

In Orlando this afternoon, the President will speak to NALEO about his efforts to help America's middle-class families and America's economy recover from the worst recession since the Great Depression. He'll note that we've made progress but we have a long way to go, and he's continuing to push Congress to act on legislation that will support our economy, support responsible homeowners, and put construction workers, first responders and teachers back to work.

I'll note some statistics recently cited by the Republican Party of Florida that bear out the progress that we've made and the work that remains to be done. Specifically, the Florida Republicans note that the unemployment rate in Florida has declined for 11 consecutive months and that more than 99,000 private sector jobs have been created in Florida alone over the last year and a half.

Yet the President is not satisfied. And unfortunately for our economy, Republicans in Congress won't act on legislation submitted by the President that would put by our estimates -- or by some estimates, I should say -- these are actually outside estimates -- 1 million people back to work. This stalemate isn't good for our economy, but it reflects the choice in this election.

The President believes we need economic policies, tax policies, and, yes, even immigration policies, that prioritizes the interests of middle-class families and where everyone in this country gets a fair shot and everyone plays by the same set of rules. Republicans merely want to double down on the economic policies like large tax cuts for the wealthy that led to the economic downturn in the first place.

So you can anticipate hearing more about those issues today, both in Orlando and in Tampa.

Q Do you anticipate the President laying out his vision for immigration reform beyond what he's already announced today?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I'll let the President's remarks speak for themselves, but you can certainly anticipate that the President will talk broadly about his efforts to strengthen middle-class families all across the country in terms of Wall Street reform that will protect the interests of middle-class families including Hispanic families; health care reform that has lowered health care costs and ensured access to health care for middle-class families all across the country, including many Hispanic families; and he'll also talk about immigration reform as well.

I think somebody's tape recorder may be playing instead of recording. I heard a little feedback. Sorry about that.

Q So no more specifics then on immigration reform going ahead?

MR. EARNEST: Tune in.

Q Josh, four years ago the President spoke to NALEO and that's when he said that immigration reform was going to be his priority from day one. And here we are four years later; what you have is just what the President did last Friday. What more can he -- will he make that pledge again to NALEO today that immigration reform will be his top priority starting in the new administration?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I don't want to say anything further to preview the President's remarks. But I will say that the President's record of prioritizing comprehensive immigration reform speaks for itself. Unfortunately, that’s a priority that’s been blocked time and time again by Republicans in Congress.

Republicans, over the last three years, have repeatedly blocked efforts to pass the DREAM Act specifically. But there are other efforts related to comprehensive immigration reform that have historically been supported by Republicans. John McCain has typically voiced support for those kinds of efforts in the past. Former President Bush, when he was in office, spent some time advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. These are the kinds of things where we should be able to build bipartisan support. But since the President took office, while he’s continued to make it a priority, Republicans have made it a priority to block those efforts at every turn.

Q The President is speaking about two hours after Marco Rubio speaks to NALEO. Has he reached out to Senator Rubio at all given the similarity between the Senator’s proposal and what the President did?

MR. EARNEST: I don’t know of any calls at this point. I can check on that for you, though.

Q The last time the Democrats tried to pass anything on immigration was in December 2010, right -- the DREAM Act. What do you say to people wondering why the President didn’t move faster on this new deportation policy and save a lot of people a lot of grief in the past year and a half -- some young kids, anyway?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I’d refer you to my colleagues at DHS who can give you the background. There have been a series of policy decisions that have been made at DHS to streamline our immigration enforcement policies, to ensure that they align cleanly with our values, but also to ensure that we have an immigration enforcement system that operates effectively and efficiently.

And the directive that was issued by the Secretary of Homeland Security last week clarifies that dedicating significant resources to enforcing those policies against people who were brought to this nation as a child and who are currently -- who don’t currently pose a threat to their communities, haven’t -- aren’t wanted for -- well, I should say don’t pose a threat to their communities, that’s not an efficient use or an effective use of our immigration enforcement resources.

So that’s the reason that the Secretary issued the directive that she did. And that builds on a record of policy-making that they have at the Department of Homeland Security about how best to use the enforcement -- the immigration enforcement resources that they have.

So the President was obviously pleased with that announcement and spoke about it at the Rose Garden ceremony last week. But the President said on Friday, and has said consistently, that that directive related to the enforcement of immigration policies does not -- is not a substitute for congressional action; it’s not a substitute for a permanent solution to our broken immigration system.

Q Change of subjects. Can you update us on Holder and the Hill?

MR. EARNEST: Well, in terms of a specific update I would refer you to my colleagues at the Department of Justice who have been working on this issue for some time. As you know, this is something that they’ve been working on with congressional Republicans for 14 months. There have been nearly a dozen hearings with the Attorney General or other Department of Justice officials. They have turned over 7,600 pages of documents. So this is an ongoing process.

It’s also apparent that Republicans are succeeding in a strategy that they laid out for all of you at the beginning of last year, where they vowed to use their investigative powers to score political points against the administration and to further obstruct the President’s legislative agenda. It’s unfortunate that they’ve chosen to use their authorities in this way to promote this stalemate. But despite that, despite that calculated strategy on their part, we remain committed to trying to find a constructive solution.

Q Are you aware of the last time the President spoke to the Attorney General, last night or this morning? Do you know the last time they spoke? And then, secondly, actress Jane Lynch was spotted at the White House this morning. Do you have any more on that?

MR. EARNEST: I don't have any information about the last time the President spoke to the Attorney General. I know that they’re in touch regularly on a whole range of issues and responsibilities that the Attorney General has. I don't know the last time that they had a conversation.

In terms of Jane Lynch, I wasn’t at the -- I was actually already onboard Air Force One when she was at the White House. So one of my colleagues at the White House should be able to fill you in on why she was there.

Q Josh, are there any negotiations going on either today or planned throughout the weekend before the vote on contempt?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I’d refer you to the Department of Justice on that. But I --

Q Do you know --

MR. EARNEST: I don't know of anything specific, but the Department of Justice is handling that matter, as they should.

Q Is the President confident that he can avoid a House vote on contempt, or is that inevitable?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I don't know if it’s inevitable. There's a Republican majority in the House of Representatives, and they seem hell-bent on using their investigative powers to promote a political stalemate and obstruct the President’s agenda and score political points. That's unfortunate, but that's a strategy that they laid out for all of you at the beginning of last year. So it’s unfortunate, but not particularly surprising.

Q Josh, the Post reported today that while he was the head of Bain Capital, Mitt Romney and the company invested in other companies that would outsource jobs overseas to China and India. Does the White House believe that that undercuts Romney’s sort of core -- sort of credentials for the -- that he’s been touting for the job? And will you press him harder on that? Will the President be talking about this specifically as he goes forward on both the campaign and other events that he does?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I understand that my colleagues at the campaign are going to have a little more to say about this this morning. What I will say for you, though, is I do think that it is an apt illustration of the differing approaches advocated in this election for strengthening our economy.

The President -- you just laid out for us the story that appeared in the Post that laid out the approach that Mr. Romney took when he was in the private sector. The President has been advocating an approach that is 100 degrees -- 180 degrees different from that, which is the President believes that we need to realign our tax policies so that we no longer provide incentives to companies who ship jobs overseas, and in fact we should implement tax policies that encourage companies to invest in America, to invest in facilities here, and to create jobs in America.

So there's a pretty -- there's no question there's a pretty stark difference between the values and approaches of the two candidates on that issue specifically.

Q Will the White House be doing stuff to -- will the campaign be doing stuff to sort of highlight that even more later?

MR. EARNEST: You should check with them on that.

Q Will the President talk about this today?

MR. EARNEST: I don't have anything to preview for you at this point.

Q Oh, go ahead. (Laughter.)

MR. EARNEST: If I’m able to later today, I will, but I don't know if I’ll be able to give you any heads-up on that.

Q Josh, do you have any more on the Wall Street Journal report that claimed that there might have been some ethical -- a bad ethical situation between David Axelrod’s firm and health care as the negotiations were going on? There were new emails that were released. I know you guys have said it was an old issue that was brought up, but the emails newly released kind of bring light to it. Were there any ethical problems there, as the report --

MR. EARNEST: I saw the report that you’re referring to, and there's -- I disagree with your contention that there's anything new there. This was reported extensively two years ago that Mr. Axelrod was not involved in any way in the contract between AKDP and PhRMA on the issue of health care reform. And there’s nothing new that was reported in the Wall Street Journal or anywhere else that sheds anything -- that sheds any new light on that.

Q Josh, do you have any response to Moody’s downgrades of a number of banks today? I mean, how big of a deal do you see that?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I saw those reports this morning as well. As you know, we don’t typically comment on the individual decisions of a specific ratings agency. What I can say is that the American banking system today is stronger and more stable as a result of the President’s efforts to push for strong reforms in the Dodd-Frank legislation. But the kinds of reforms, including things like higher capital requirements for banks, makes it less likely that taxpayers would be on the hook as a result of a bank failure, but adds strength to the system more generally because of those reforms.

But in terms of the individual action taken today, I don’t have a specific comment on it.

Q Josh, there’s been a couple new books in the works that I think are close to being published; they’re excerpted both in The New York Times and The Washington Post. One was about Michelle Obama’s ancestry and family history, and the other about the President and his youth. And I’m wondering if the White House is -- I can be more specific if you need -- but I’m wondering if the White House knows if the President has read those books and -- or the excerpts of those books, I should say, and what his reaction is. And Michelle Obama, if she’s read it -- the same question.

MR. EARNEST: I don’t know if they’ve -- to be honest with you, I don’t know if they’ve seen those excerpts or not.

Q Does the White House generally have a response about the books? I mean, they both raise some interesting questions, both about racial issues, but also about -- in particular, the book about the President, about his -- sort of his own biography, Dreams of My Father, and some of the anecdotes he brought up. It sort of raises some questions about sort of the accuracy of some of those, even beyond maybe what the President acknowledged at the foreword of that book, about some of the composite characters.

MR. EARNEST: Well, I’m not sure about that last part. I mean, the President was pretty candid in the foreward of the book, as you point out, that he was using a narrative to try to tell a story that did reflect his life. But he was very candid and upfront, literally -- actually, in this case, by writing it in the foreward -- about how the story was told.

And I think Mr. Marannis himself, in fact, talked about that, and talked about the differing approaches that the two took to telling the story, and that both have been candid about the approach that they’ve taken in that regard. But in terms of -- I would refer you to the specific language in the foreward of the book, because the President really is pretty -- was explicit at the time that he wrote the book about the kind of techniques that he used to tell that story.

Q And you have no comment -- no knowledge or comment about whether they’ve seen the book? You don’t know --

MR. EARNEST: I haven’t talked to him about that.

Q Josh, there’s a story in the AP today about frustration among military and intelligence officials about attacks by militants on U.S. troops in Afghanistan who then flee to Pakistan. How firm is the President about not using U.S. troops on the ground to chase those militants into Pakistan?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I'm not in a position to comment on the specifics that were included in that AP report today. But our concern about militants using Pakistan as a safe haven from which to launch attacks against our forces are well known. That's something that we raise both publicly and privately with the Pakistani government.

We'll take steps necessary to mitigate that threat. We value our relationship with Pakistan and we'll continue to find ways to work together to combat those terrorist groups that pose a threat both to the United States forces, but also to innocent Pakistani civilians.

Q When you say you'll take steps to mitigate that threat, does that mean that you could potentially send U.S. soldiers across the border to chase down those militants?

MR. EARNEST: I won't preview the kinds of things that are being discussed, and frankly, whether or not they're even being discussed by the administration. But I can tell you that this is something -- this threat is something that we have talked about quite extensively both publicly and privately. It's something that we have raised with the Pakistanis and we remain committed to finding ways to work with them to combat the threat that these groups pose both to U.S. forces, but also to innocent Pakistani civilians.

Q -- if the President read or watched any of Romney's speech yesterday to NALEO, to the same group? Did he watch that? And then also, did he watch the basketball game last night, and any reaction to the outcome?

MR. EARNEST: I don't know if the President watched all of Mr. Romney's speech. Frankly, I doubt that he did. But I'm sure that he's seen news reports of it this morning. And I don't know about the basketball game, actually. I will circle back with you guys on whether or not he watched the basketball game or whether he had a specific reaction to the game.

Q -- speak to NALEO today, and it comes on his reports that he's looking to scrub the voter roles. Some Democrats are suggesting that that's an attempt to get rid of Hispanic voters. Does the President have that concern, specifically in Florida, but also in other states --

MR. EARNEST: Well, I can tell you as a general matter, not specifically related to the Florida activities, that the President does believe strongly in protecting the right of citizens to vote and cast a ballot in an election, particularly in an election that's as important as this.

I know that the Department of Justice has been working with the state of Florida on this -- I know that they've actually raised some serious concerns about this as well. And I'd refer you to them for the specifics of those concerns.

Q Can they sue them?

MR. EARNEST: I don't know exactly where they stand in terms of -- on that process, but I know that serious and specific concerns have been made. But for more details, like where they stand in the legal proceedings, I'd refer you to my colleagues at the Department of Justice.

Okay? All right, thanks, everybody. Enjoy the ride.
