Photo Gallery: Secretary Clinton in Africa

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton hugs a camper while participating in a Camp GLOW event for girls at the Lilongwe Girls Secondary School in Lilongwe, Malawi, Aug. 5, 2012. In early August, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton embarked on an 11-day, nine country trip through Africa. She worked to strengthen alliances and advance the pillars of President Obama’s strategy for sub-Saharan Africa: supporting democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, advancing peace and security, and promoting opportunity and development. As she said to a group of African students in Dakar: “We want to advance your aspirations and our shared values…we want this to be our mutual mission. That is the work we are called to do in the 21st century.”
In addition to the speech that framed the trip in Senegal, she met President Sall and other national leaders and spoke about how Senegal's strong democratic institutions are a model for other nations.
She then traveled east to the world’s youngest country, South Sudan, where she and President Kiir discussed security, oil and economic opportunity.

From the Archives: Presidents as Fathers
As you celebrate Dad this weekend, consider giving a nod to the Presidents who helped give him his own national holiday. On this day in 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first Presidential Father’s Day Proclamation. It set aside the third Sunday in June in celebration of fathers. Six years later, it became a permanent holiday by order of President Richard Nixon. Each year since then, the Presidents have issued yearly Father’s Day proclamations.
Presidents have enjoyed the day as fathers themselves, and over the years many children have enlivened the White House. Some presidents enter office as grandfathers, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt who had 13 grandchildren. Others, like current President Obama, are fathers to school age children.
In celebration of fathers everywhere, here’s an album of Presidents with the people who know them simply as “Dad” and “Granddad.” These photos are from the holdings of the Presidential Libraries of the U.S. National Archives. Archives Link

Statement by the President on the Agreement between Sudan and South Sudan
I welcome the historic agreement that was reached today between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan on a number of critical issues. This agreement breaks new ground in support of the international vision of two viable states at peace with each other, and represents substantial progress in resolving the outstanding security and economic issues between Sudan and South Sudan. The Sudanese and South Sudanese people who have suffered greatly through decades of conflict deserve the benefits of a lasting peace – a peace that can only be achieved through continued dialogue and negotiation, sustained implementation of the agreements reached to date, and steadfast work to resolve remaining issues.
I commend the resolute efforts of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel, led by President Thabo Mbeki, for its leadership in shepherding this agreement. I also commend those international partners who have contributed to this peace process, particularly the chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union, and the United Nations.
The leaders of Sudan and South Sudan have chosen to take another important step on the path away from conflict toward a future in which their citizens can live in dignity, security, and prosperity. The United States is committed to working with both countries as they implement these agreements and as they seek to resolve those issues that remain outstanding. We are hopeful that today’s deal can help spur broader progress on resolving the conflict in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, securing unfettered international humanitarian access in those areas, and bringing peace to Darfur.

Ed. note: This post was originally published on Let's Move!.
Tomorrow, more than 170,000 people across the country are expected to celebrate National Public Lands Day – America’s largest, single-day, outdoor volunteer effort. More than 2,000 public land and water sites across the country will offer FREE admission to volunteers who give a few hours of their time to help improve and restore outdoor spaces.
National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity to get active while showing your appreciation for the public parks, trails, beaches, lakes, rivers and forests that belong to all of us as Americans. Last year, volunteers collectively planted more than 100,000 trees and plants and maintained or built 1,500 miles of trails – all in one day’s work! This year, the goal is to top those contributions and engage more kids and families.
With events taking place in every state, there are many different ways to get involved.
